Kitchen Music

Kitchen Music

The band's name McInnis' Kitchen pays special homage to the tradition of "kitchen music." In the outports of Newfoundland and the rural areas of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia the term is used to locally describe a social gathering in one's home where stories, music and dance are shared.

This is part of the social fabric of fishing communities, rural settlements and outports of the Canadian Atlantic. This process helps define and preserve their cultural unity and identity, and strengthens social bonding within the community. The kitchen, itself, is a significant space where life centers. Much of the daily routines are done in the kitchen, such as cooking, mending, eating meals, entertaining visitors, socializing and making music.

This tradition is an important part of the cultural fabric and upbringing of members of Mcinnis' Kitchen. That same kitchen party feeling of openness, hospitality, lightheartedness and spontaneity are an integral part of every McInnis' Kitchen performance. <back>
